Card Collections

Lucas, being a typical 7 year old, is into collecting cards. All kinds of cards, Pokemon cards, and several other sets of cards that I can't even pronounce the names for.

Just a few days ago...one of our neighbours, and a friend of his, who is slightly older than him, gave him a whole set of trading cards. The problem, several of the cards in the set are very "dark". I'm talking very evil looking. I'm not just saying this because I'm a Christian, they just are very dark.

Rightly or wrongly, my approach in these matters hasn't been to just take them away from him. Instead we talk about the content of the cards etc. And then I leave it at that. A couple of hours after we'd talked this afternoon, Lucas came up to me and had decided to get rid of about half the set. Frankly, he was more descriminating than I would have been, however, I want these things to be his decisions, not mine.

Don't get me wrong...I'm not the "don't play with this, don't touch that, cards are evil, kind of guy.

But it's good to see him descriminating between what he thinks is good for him and what he thinks is not.

I certainly agree with your approach. The minute you say you can't have it or play with it, the more they want it. The best we can do as parents is give our kids the tools to make the right decisions. (Though there is a lot of prayer at times that they do make the right decision)

Indeed, my friend, indeed.

Within the few weeks that we have met. I have admired the efforts (lack of a better word) you take with your kids. Lucas is an intelligent soul and his love for his poppa is evident. You did not take the easy route with Lucas by taking away the cards from him, but the loving, trusting approach. I am not shocked of the outcome with the cards. He is such a great kid. Some say it is the air down here in Port Colborne... nah! It's you and Vun buddy! I'm glad that you are here! "How do you like the spelling? ; )"

Da spelin be of the very good kind.

I knew when we met on halloween that there was a connection. It's been good to connect over the past two weeks. It feels like we've known you guys forever.

Looking forward to backyard fires and long front porch conversations and once we get our bikes...trail rides too. See you soon.
