As for being out of shape...

As we packed up to leave for home from Blue Mountain a couple of days ago, a friend and I realized something. We were out of shape. You wouldn't know it from looking at us. We look pretty fit. The issue is more a lack of the kind of activity that keeps you from feeling sore anytime you do something more strenuous.

As we sat there we talked about how we were so much more active in our younger days, especially back in the days of high school and college. Along with that realization came another one, back then you didn't do any of those activities to be in shape. You did them because they were fun. Being in shape was just a bi-product. At our age, however, being in shape seems to have become the goal for people, and so you go to the gym, not to have fun, but to get, be and stay in shape. Now we work and pay pretty handsomely to do it, in some cases, so we can get and stay in shape. But who really wants to work more?

Anyway, that was the observation...maybe the next time we talk we can talk about what we'll do about it. Or maybe it'll just be an observation we made.

I guess if it led to a commitment to doing more of those fun things we used to do, that lead us to being in shape, not as the goal, but the bi-product, that would be a good thing.
